For sale is a Selmer Super Balanced Action tenor saxophone!
This horn is an extremely late run SBA with a serial number of 54,xxx!!!
The SBA was always a work in progress that had evolved over time till it inevitably morphed into a brand new model the legendary Selmer Mark VI. Throughout the SBA run while evolving over time the saxes became much better players with great advancements. The latest of the SBAs just prior to Mark VI change over are greatly coveted as some of the best of the best saxophones ever made. This saxophone has a serial number of 54xxx which is an extremely desirable serial number and it doesn't get better!
There were only some approximately 21,000, 22,000 Super Balanced Actions ever made total. Out of those horns were sopranos, altos, tenors, baritones, and perhaps some other quirky horns produced. So only a % of those horns could have ever been tenor.. Out of those remaining horns so many times the horns are missing necks, huge pickups or patches on the neck, completely trashed bodies, horrible relaqs with massive buffing, patches on the body tube and all sorts of other random repairs that lower the condition. Other saxophones were lost to the times, destroyed on fires or natural disasters, or hidden away in a barn never to see the light of day.
Considering the few actual number of SBA tenor's out there in the world and considering all the variables and various conditions you can find them in, this saxophone sitting exactly as it is in a serial number makes this saxophone an awesome find!
This saxophone is old sax and throughout the entire horn has its fair share of scratches, knicks, dings, fleabites, extreme patina, engraving wear, cracks, tarnish, metal wear of various colors red and green, weld marks, repair marks, and other anomalies associated with an old horn. The saxophone has a thumb tip size dent on the bow, and a various amount of other dings throughout the entire horn. On the neck the area that has the serial number stamped on the neck is off to the side and not in the typical position. My theory is most likely there was a repair and the tech doing work on the horn and neck and while solidifying the neck did not align the serial number in the typical position. This sax has had a recent overhaul, but will need a setup by your tech!
This is a fantastic price on this horn! 54xxx don't just come out of nowhere and they are very very rare. If you love this horn and are looking to invest in an SBA please buy and PayPal confidently this is a very special piece!
