Musical Instrument Consignment
The Sax Stable is pleased to offer musical instrument consignment from our Los Angeles brass & woodwinds showroom. We are a premier purveyor of new, used and vintage instruments specializing in saxophones as well all brass and woodwinds. Our focus is on curating and offering a premium concierge level buying experience where the musician novice to professional is able to immerse themselves in the pursuit of their next horn!
The Sax Stable is the ideal place to sell or consign your brass and woodwind instrument! We live and breathe musical instruments and have all of the resources set and ready to sell your instrument through our refined process. We have the facility, knowledge, customer base, responsibility and sales drive ready to help sell your instruments.
Sax Stable has a huge advantage in power of numbers vs a single individual seller with one single instrument for sale. Typically, when a shop has a plethora of options available that allows the prospective buyers to shop/purchase confidently. For example, a buyer is more likely to purchase in a retail venue with multiple options to choose from vs a random seller or flipper with one or two horns requiring an uncomfortable strip mall parking lot cash exchange meetup. When purchasing a pre-owned brass or woodwind instrument, having a professional environment and seller with a wide range of options creates a more reassuring buying experience which leads to a faster consignment timeline and higher sell prices.
We love brass & woodwinds and would love the opportunity to serve you selling your horn while working to provide the community a fantastic selection and assortment of horns.
Musicians looking to purchase vintage, collectible or high end instruments can be extremely particular about the buying and purchasing process. Selling an instrument is a simple but complex task. Oftentimes, single sellers who are not experienced in the safe selling and shipping process, and securely taking payment, etc will find great benefit from working with a consignment house who is able to squeeze the most value out of your instrument while offering a safe selling experience for a valuable good. In order to effectively sell a used musical instrument for top dollar value there are many aspects of the selling process with each step needing to be perfectly executed on. We work for you to sell your instruments efficiently and effectively to bring you a top market value pay out!
Obtaining top value for our consignment clients is a paramount priority. We use the following methods:
-
High Quality Photos - We go above and beyond to give every instrument a full professional showcase photoshoot. We are not simply snapping some pictures and moving on. We are artfully producing an extensive photo shoot capturing and selecting the best photos, best angles & best specifics that give the buyer a true feel of what the horn will look like in the hands while highlighting all of the horn's hot spots!
Every instrument, model, make, era, engravings, finish, serial number, variant each has specific intricacies that make that exact horn a unique piece. By having a great understanding of these instruments we are able to focus photos, descriptions and listings to highlight these exact areas which is what prospective buyers want to help them make a confident decision and purchase.
- Customized listings on a unique website listing - We create a unique individual listing for each and every instrument for sale. Using our website we work to create an individual landing page with a unique URL for your exact horn. Every instrument gets a detailed individual description and individual search engine optimizations. The more back information you have about your horn for consignment the better of a write up we can make to help sell.
- Multi Channel Sales - We offer a multi channel sale platform to maximize the exposure of your instrument in order to generate awareness and drive a sale. Many other consignment music stores never list horns for sale on the internet and simply keep consignment horns for sale at a store level, limiting exposure and decreasing the likelihood of a sale. Many dealers will only list consigned horns on their personal website which limits the global reach. Your instrument will be posted and publicly for sale on all available platforms. Alongside all of our website traffic your horn will be available at our In-person retail store showroom, Reverb, Ebay, Instagram, Facebook, Google Ads, Facebook Ads, etc. This works to cast an extremely wide fishnet advertising your horn to the world!
- Los Angeles Showroom - We are thrilled to offer on site sales at our Los Angeles brass and woodwinds store. We have a beautiful showroom that allows a comfortable setting for buyers to purchase on site. While many dealers are exclusively out of their home or solely internet based we are ecstatic to welcome the community into our facility to play test and purchase. When selling these types of instruments it can be extremely hard to solely buy off the internet. Buying a musical instrument is such a personal thing. This type of purchase is always best in person where you are able to see the horn with your own eyes, touch the horn, hold the horn, play it and hear exactly what it sounds like. Being able to offer customers the option to experience the instrument prior to purchase leads to a more successful sale with shorter consignment periods and higher sell prices for your consigned instrument!
- Los Angeles Based - We are extremely lucky to be located within Southern California. Southern California is a huge sprawling megaplex of cities and urban sprawl with a population of some 24 million people! We also offer easy West Coast accessibility from San Francisco, San Diego, Arizona, Las Vegas & Mexico with great ease. There are few locations in the United States that offer such a large population of potential buyers which helps with consignment. Aside from the SoCal population it’s also important to touch on the professional LA music scene. Los Angeles is easily one of the top professional music cities in the world. While there are some fantastic music cities such as Nashville or NYC when you're talking raw numbers there are more professional musicians based in Los Angeles getting paid to play then any other city in the world! These are studio musicians, touring musicians, corporate gigging musicians, artists as their own name etc. Professional musicians need to have the proper tools and having this pool of professional buyers helps to sell your instruments! Lastly, Los Angeles is a HUGE tourist vacation hub. Musicians from all over the world travel to the US and will save money to buy the musical instrument of their dreams while here. Being in a major tourist destination helps to sell your instruments to one off buyers on vacation! It is the triple combination of enormous population + vast professional player scene + massive tourist hub that makes Los Angeles such a great place to consign your musical instrument for sale!
- Transparent consignment pricing - All terms and conditions are advertised up front. Exactly what you see is exactly what you get. Within the consignment world for any products industry it’s commonplace for dealers to have zero or little info posted on their website about consignment with a simple blanket “Contact us for consignments”. These types of closed terms typically come from a place without much experience consigning or someone that may be adjusting their fees based on the conversation in real time. We are offering fantastic customer facing consignment terms and are happy to advertise everything transparent and upfront.
- Aligning sales strategy with consignors objectives - We work closely with you to determine a selling strategy best suited to the objectives of your situation. We work with you to figure out exactly what the instrument is, what your time table looks like, what story or background your instrument might have and what intrinsic value it might hold to help with the salability or retail price. Some sellers are looking for a long sale willing to hold out for a tip top price on a lengthy sale, other sellers are hoping for a shorter quicker to the point sale and pay out.
- Global Reach & Paid ADs - Over the decades in this industry the Sax Stable has developed a global reputation and global reach within the brass and winds world which helps to sell your consigned products! Our website gets an astonishing amount of traffic from almost every country of the world! We are actively participating in paid Google ADs, paid Facebook META ADs, paid Ebay/Reverb ADs etc all which greatly helps with our overall reach. Over all of this time in business we have been able to create internal spreadsheets of information about buyers and collectors to help with selling. On a regular basis buyers are emailing us with requests looking for very specific horns. Our detailed spreadsheets and data put us in a position that when we sell your horn oftentimes we will have a handful of buyers ready to reach out to already interested in said specification of instrument. When you put all of this together we have a global reach to sell musical instruments thats very effective compared to a single seller party.
- Concierge Level Sales & Customer Service - We LOVE brass & woodwinds here at the Sax Stable. We are made up of a small team of musicians that eat, sleep and breathe musical instruments! When you reach out about an instrument for sale you are not emailing some random big box corporate store. Each and every inquiry that comes in we are happy to open up a dialogue and work at great lengths with potential buyers to help place horns with their forever homes! Many times the sellers of these instruments are not offering this type of customer service. Typical large box music stores with random employees, pawn shops, estate sales, church sales, auction houses or other individual parties that might not fully know how to represent a horn properly will not give the dedicated customer service of a specialist. This can lead to a poor purchasing environment which discourages buyers from purchasing. It’s our pleasure to offer our customers a concierge level one on one buying experience which helps to sell your instrument! Regardless of if the prospective buyer has questions about the horns model, tone, specifications, history, buying process etc we are happy to engage with buyers and offer a top level of customer service which helps sell horns!
Consignment Fees
Consignment is driven by our passion to keep the business moving forward offering the widest selection of quality instruments for our customers. It’s no secret or hidden that in the end the business needs to show something for the time and effort taken to sell your instrument.
We work for you for a low 15% consignment fee
Payment processing and marketplace fees are applicable depending on the sales channel and buyers payment method.
Unfortunately in today's digital selling there is no way to escape internet marketplace fees, Ebay fees, Reverb fees, PayPal fees or credit card processing fees. To make sure we are clear and upfront any incurred selling processing fee is in addition to the 15% consignment fee.
When you consider what goes into selling a horn this is a great value. As a professional dealer with a track record for obtaining retail prices, typically we are able to sell your instrument for a higher price then you would have been able to, which generally pays for our fee without ever feeling it “out of pocket”. When you look at the time put in by us it’s a very fair rate.
From the moment we receive your saxophone we start working. We are giving each horn a full length photo session which takes time. We are building the listing on the website as well all other platforms which takes time. We are following up with leads and inquiries in as close to real time as possible.
For high end instruments this can sometimes be extremely lengthy messaging, phone calls, or multiple in person store appointments leading up to a sale. It’s not uncommon for a player to message us hundreds of times about an instrument before being ready to purchase confidently.
Once the horn sells and payment is received, we then ship and package the instrument professionally to minimize the likelihood of shipping damage and anomalies.
An item’s marketplace (e.g., Reverb & eBay) price is marked to reflect the additional cost of the transaction than if completed in person at our showroom location or through our own sales channel website. Pricing ultimately comes down to what form of payment is taken and through which sales channel. We offer the following pricing: To ensure clarity, please be informed that you will be charged 15% of the total selling price in addition to the marketplace selling fees. Including credit card fees, PayPal fees, or eBay fees in the consignment price or it would make it unfeasible for us to offer our services.
We have access to competitive third-party marketplace fees due to our high selling volume, which unlocks lower commissions and fees on eBay and other online platforms. We pass these savings on to you. Marketplace prices are set to reflect the additional transaction costs compared to transactions made in person at our showroom or through our own website.
Ultimately, pricing depends on the payment method and sales channel used. Here is an overview of our pricing structure:
- In-store or Sax Stable website: 15% of consignment fee of total gross receipt (Saxophone+Sales Tax+Shipping)
- $300 minimum fee
- Payment Processing Fee: Applies to non-cash transactions, cost varies based on payment method and location (2.9% - 4.5%).
- No minimum fee, no mark up, pay actual payment processing transaction fee
- Internet Marketplace Sales: marketplace transaction fee (range 3% - 14% of gross receipt)
- ◦ No minimum fee, no mark up, pay actual cost of the marketplace transaction fee
We strive to complete sales in person through our showroom location or through our own website directly in order to maximize the return for our consignors. Ultimately, we cannot guarantee sales through a specific channel nor will we exclude items from a channel. Ebay offers such a global reach to instrument buyers that everything must be posted there, however we are happy to report a majority of the time buyers will find and reach out to us directly to move forward with a purchase.
Mouthpiece, Ligatures, Necks and Accessories consignment
We are excited to offer used and vintage mouthpiece consignment. Please consign your entire mouthpiece collection with us! We are used mouthpiece specialists and are able to obtain the highest pricing for our merchandise. Due to the complexities associated with selling mouthpieces, ligatures and necks on consignment our pricing structure reflects these challenges:
- Retail Value:
- 25% - $0 - $500
- 20% - $500 - $1500
- 15% - $1500+
- In-store or Sax Stable website: 15-25% of consignment fee of total gross receipt (Mouthpiece+Sales Tax+Shipping)
- $50 minimum fee
- Marketplace Sales: 15-25% consignment fee of gross receipt + marketplace transaction fee (range 3% - 14% of gross receipt)
- ◦ $50 minimum fee
Quick Cashout Option
We are pleased to offer a quick cashout option. We understand that selling brass and winds is not always an instant quick process. If at any point during the consignment you are ready to part ways with your instrument and don't want to wait for the final buyer to appear, we provide an option to cash out at 60% of the appraised value noted in your consignment contract.
Perhaps you consign a horn and for whatever reason weeks or months later an unexpected situation occurs causing a need for cash. We are prepared to move quickly to purchase and pay you out for your instrument. It’s important to note the vast majority of other consignment houses do not purchase inventory with the store's money under any circumstances. You would first have to request your saxophone back, pay for shipping, wait for the horn to be delivered and then first start the final selling process.
This service is a simple feature to know exists in the back of your mind. We hope to sell your saxophone as quickly as possible, however with many high end exotic saxophones this can take some time. If the situation ever occurs you can rest assured we are always buying instruments ready to pay and purchase at any point as a fail safe. Benefits include:
- Cash or bank wire payment prepared and remitted the next business day
- No Ebay fees - we pay you 60%
- Cash available on your terms
Repairs
All repairs performed on a horn to enhance value, playability are the financial responsibility of the owner.
We will not repair any instrument without talking with you upfront about the options.
Generally horns fall under the NOT WORKING or WORKING category. If an instrument falls in the middle gray zone of “almost working” sometimes its best to repair it to help maximize the sell price! If a saxophone is in playing condition, that's fantastic we will leave as is.
If a saxophone is fully not working, we will leave as is its typically best to just sell as is for the next owner to decide what they would like to do.
Sometimes high end instruments come in almost in playing condition and need a small amount of work to be considered a fully playing saxophone. In these instances the repair is likely to return a higher sale price. This is when its best to do some repair.
Each instrument will be assessed case by case at our discretion what needs to be done or not done to the horn, but if it's advantageous to sell a saxophone for a much higher price we will advise to fix the horn. Horn repair is an additional expense deductible from the final sale proceeds.
If you request your horn back you will also be responsible to pay for the repairs prior to return shipment.
Once again we will not fix any instrument without talking with you and offering the options. If we want to fix the instrument its because we truly believe it will be impactful to the final sell price!
