Selmer 130th Anniversary Adolphe Sax Limited Edition Alto Saxophone
This is an absolutely stunning Selmer 130th Anniversary Adolphe Sax Limited Edition Alto saxophone. This horn is 1 of just 40 total Limited Edition 130th Anniversaries that came to North America, with a hard cap of only 400 total units produced worldwide. It is extremely rare that one of these comes to market, as most were immediately locked away in private collections from day one. Unlike past limited edition runs that were merely cosmetic facelifts on existing body tubes, the 130th Anniversary features an outstanding number of custom-engineered mechanical and acoustic components built exclusively for this model to bridge historical lineage with modern intonation.
Global Production and True Scarcity
Henri Selmer Paris restricted the total global production of this model to exactly 400 units worldwide to mark the bicentenary of Adolphe Sax’s birth and Selmer's 130th anniversary. Only a tiny fraction of that run, approximately 40 horns total, was allocated to the entire North American market. Finding a clean, mint-condition specimen circulating in the United States is an incredible rarity for serious collectors and elite players.
The 2015 Historic Milestone Release
Henri Selmer Paris officially launched this limited series in 2015. The release was timed precisely to celebrate two massive historic milestones in woodwind history: the 130th anniversary of the founding of the Henri Selmer Paris company (established in 1885) and the exact bicentenary (200th birthday) of Adolphe Sax himself, who was born in 1814.
The Finish: Contrast Pearl Satin Silver and Mirror Keys
The aesthetic presentation of this instrument is spectacular, featuring a premium Satin Silver finish on the body tube that gives it a gorgeous matte pearl appearance. This is beautifully offset by bright, mirror-polished silver-plated keywork. The entire visual profile commands attention the second you open the case.
The Acoustic Engineering: Resonator-less White Pads
This horn features exclusive, ultra-dense white leather pads utilizing rivets only, completely free of traditional metal or plastic resonators. Normally, a lack of resonators makes a saxophone play overtly dark or stuffy, but Selmer custom-engineered a specialized high-density modern backing for these specific pads. This material absorbs far less acoustic energy, reflecting the sound waves cleanly out of the tone holes to produce a deeply focused, velvety, multi-dimensional warmth that blends beautifully like a vintage woodwind while retaining a crisp, immediate response and impeccable modern French intonation.
Vintage Mechanical Architecture: Model 22 and Balanced Action DNA
Selmer integrated specific historical design elements directly into the mechanics of this model. The neck tube and octave key mechanism are direct tributes to the historic 1922 Selmer Model 22, featuring a neck design with no under-brace that leaves the brass tube entirely free to vibrate for an open, resonant upper register. The octave key spatula mechanism is adapted straight from the legendary Balanced Action for a familiar, lightning-fast modern ergonomic feel. Traditional modern key guards were cast aside in favor of sleek, minimalist wire guards that replicate the clean look of 19th-century prototypes, and traditional mother-of-pearl key touches are replaced by solid nickel-silver finger buttons.
The Modele 26 Octave Key Touchpiece
While the mechanics are inspired by the Model 22 and the spatula by the Balanced Action, Selmer added another massive vintage Easter egg for the player's left thumb. The actual metal octave key touchpiece on the back of the horn was completely redesigned to replicate the exact shape and profile of the thumb key that first appeared on the historic Selmer Modele 26 back in 1926.
Genuine Mother-of-Pearl Thumb Rest
Unlike standard modern professional saxophones that utilize a basic plastic piece for the left thumb rest, the 130th Anniversary model features a premium, custom-fitted disc made from genuine, solid white mother-of-pearl. This is paired with an adjustable, high-grade metal right-hand thumb hook to ensure both maximum cosmetic elegance and ergonomic versatility.
Extended Pearl Rollers Throughout the Keywork
To fully capture the tactile feel of an early woodwind instrument, Selmer completely removed standard modern plastic rollers. This horn features custom-crafted, genuine white pearl rollers that are extended all the way up the key stack, providing an incredibly smooth, fluid response and a seamless vintage look across the entire mechanism.
Fully Ribbed Construction and Heavy Semicircular Bell Pillar
Acoustically, the body tube is built using heavy, traditional fully ribbed construction for maximum tonal core, stability, and weight. It features a unique, heavy-duty semicircular compound bell key pillar and a detachable bell assembly, ensuring that the horn maintains a rigid mechanical foundation despite its highly resonant, open, and lightweight wire key guards.
Custom Engraving: Four Historical Easter Eggs
The bell features an absolute masterclass in custom engraving that acts as a literal visual biography of the invention of the saxophone. If you look closely under a loupe, you will find four stunning historical tributes woven into the scrolling artwork. First, there are exact architectural blueprint sketches from Adolphe Sax’s original 1846 French patent. Second, there is a detailed depiction of an industrial machine from his original Paris workshop. Third, you will see a beautiful engraving of a parrot, which is a nod to Adolphe Sax's eccentric personal passion for ornithology and his massive private exotic bird collection. Fourth, the structural backdrop elements pay homage to the legendary steel-and-glass Crystal Palace of the London 1851 Great Exhibition where Adolphe Sax first unveiled his instruments to the global stage.
